The Andrea Lang Fund
was established in 1994 as a memorial to the life and work
of artist, Andrea Lang, who died in the Painted Cave Fire
on June 27, 1990. The Andrea Lang Fund (ALF), at the Santa
Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, creates and funds innovative
interactions between artists, students and cultural organizations
who display a unique sensitivity to nature.
Andrea lived and created in Santa Barbara for 10 years, always
connected to the beauty and spirit of the natural surroundings,
although nearly all her drawings, paintings and children's
books perished with her, her devotion to creativity and nature
lives on through the educational efforts of the Andrea Lang
Fund.
A disciplined, imaginative, and sensitive artist, whose creative
process was one of her most valued activities, Andrea Lang
produced hundreds of watercolor paintings, pen and ink drawings,
illustrations, and children's books. Her drawings were featured
in the New York Times, but her most beloved drawings were
those included in her imaginative and lively illustrated letters
to her family and friends telling them about her daily life.
She was passionate about living and creating in harmony with
nature and her references to nature and her life in letters
that survive with her friends are an incredible legacy.

| llustration from Andrea Lang's unfinished
children's book, Myth of Demeter and Peresphone 1990,
was reproduced in chalk at the Eugene Festival sponsored
by the Maude Kerns Art Center in Oregon and at the I
Madonnari festival in Santa Barbara, California. |
At CAF we honor the incredible,
invincible spirit of Andrea Lang who will live in our hearts
and spirits forever. Years after the tragic Painted Cave
fire, the creativity of this beautiful shining star still
inspires young students through the art education activities
in her name.
