smART Salon:
The Value of a MFA
Since the 1960’s, artists have debated the benefits of a graduate degree in visual art. With the rise in graduate program costs and the increasing globalization of the contemporary art market, is an MFA still seen as "the first legitimator in an artist’s career,” as Sarah Thornton concludes in Seven Days in the Art World? Join us for a panel discussion considering the pros and cons of the Masters of Fine Arts. Panelists include Ann Bermingham, professor and researcher at the University of California Santa Barbara; Jane Chafin, gallery owner and writer; Piero Golia, LA-based artist; Nathan Hayden, MFA graduate and artist; Kori Newkirk, MFA graduate and LA-based artist; and Hank Pitcher, Santa Barbara-based artist and BFA graduate.

For questions regarding the smART Salons, please email education@sbcaf.org or call (805) 966-5373 x103.

Forum Lounge:
Cindy Derby, Edward’s House of String
5 pm Happy Hour: Wine provided by La Tour Wine Merchants and music by Warbler Records & Goods
7 pm Performance
LA-based artist Cindy Derby combines a mix of stop-motion animation, intricate puppetry, and handcrafted scenic elements to create an existential narrative told through the perspective of Edward the Skeleton. As Derby manipulates Edward through the world of unseen forces that influence and transform the psyche, she illuminates the power of memory and rumination.

We invite you to view UCSB MFA 2012 Exhibition: Headgear for Tony between 5 and 7 pm.

Thursday, July 5
Forum Lounge: Uppur Bunk, Quest
5 pm Happy Hour: Wine provided by La Tour Wine Merchants and music by Warbler Records & Goods
7 pm Performance

The artists of the Uppur Bunk Collaborative Art Space take over CAF for an experimental performance that pokes fun at the social nature of the so-called art world. The artists will lead the attending crowd through an interactive art experience that involves “schmoozing and boozing” one’s way to the upper echelons of the art world. Guests will gather tokens and talismans--drink tokens, bracelets, and laminated badges--that allow access to hidden areas and secret zones within the gallery, available only to the most talkative and investigative players. The fun continues as Uppur Bunk and Forum Lounge partner for Afterparty, a second dynamic art evening held at the Uppur Bunk space in Goleta, Friday, July 6 from 8 to 10 pm.

We invite you to view UCSB MFA 2012 Exhibition: Headgear for Tony between 5 and 7 pm.
