EDUCATION+ is an ambitious, new three-part art educational initiative offering Santa Barbara area youth a comprehensive curriculum of innovative workshops, apprenticeships, and educational resources.
EDUCATION+ consists of three, ongoing educational initiatives that work in conjunction with the cutting-edge, contemporary art exhibitions taking place in the galleries.

Funded in party by the Andrea Lang Fund, a memorial to the life and work of artist, Andrea Lang.

FAMILY + is a series of six interactive and multi-disciplinary workshops annually that offers families hands-on experiences related to the creative processes of art making.  FAMILY+ workshops are organized by Lead Educator, Jenn Figg and take place either inside the gallery or in artists’ studios, outdoor courtyards, and other places of interest that are rarely accessible to the public.  Children are encouraged to participate in hands-on art, music, photography, dance, video, and other interdisciplinary activities, gaining valuable critical thinking skills by posing questions and offering art as a means to explore potential answers.

CONVERSATION+
is a multi-use interpretive space in CAF’s gallery that provides visitors a flexible area to explore the art on view—brochures and artist books, exhibition-related guides and activities, further reading and visual materials—enabling a more individualized exploration of specific topics.  The space displays live demonstrations, hands-on art projects, and self-paced learning activities that allow visitors to gain a greater appreciation for the art and culture of our time.

YOUTH+ “Bringing Together the Artists of Our Time with the Artists of the Future.” This is a year-long program that takes local public high school students and places them in a prestigious studio, internship and exhibition track.  Students are selected by a review committee based on artistic merit, commitment to exploring the arts, and a GPA of 3.0 or above. In STUDIO+, eligible students work side by side with professional artists to gain knowledge of materials and processes and are given the time and resources necessary to experiment and create sophisticated artwork for a public exhibition sponsored by CAF for their college admissions portfolio. In the fall of 2007, students worked weekly with artist/educator Allison Holt to create unique and personal works of surf inspired artwork.  Each student crafted a unique artwork inspired by the concurrent exhibition, Glass Love: Contemporary Art and Surf .  As the culmination of the Studio+ apprenticeship, these works will be exhibited at the Twelve35 Teen Center from November 16 through December 8, 2007.
